mysql or java interface to R

The data that I am analysing is stored in a mysql database on a linux
system.
I am currently extracting this data to a text file and then analysing it
with R. Is there
some way of implementing an interface to a remote database in R. Or
perhaps a
java interface that would allow JDBC access to mysql.
