RMySQL still treats timestamp as character?

Possibly, but R uses doubles for datetimes, unlike POSIX, and also has a classs for dates. (Datetimes prior to 1850 are very dubious anyway, as there were no timezones.) In other words, R's date and datetime classes are known to work as accurately as character representations.
