R under Ubuntu 8.10 / Wine

Well, it's complicated under the hood, but all those packages and
dependencies will be handled automatically by your package manager. Why
does this bother you? Are you really tight for drive space? If not,
there's no reason to worry about it. I've never tried running R under
Wine, but that does sound complicated.
