problem with ldpaths

No, we cannot as you didn't even tell us which version os Ubuntu you used.

This works for _a lot_ of people. It also works in countless unattended
installs (as eg on Debian, Launchpad, Travis, ... to build or test packages)
so "something" is different at your end. But from the information supplied we
cannot possibly tell what it may be.

Jim,

What version of Ubuntu are you using?  Was this a fresh install or an 
upgrade?  This is the only report of this I have heard, so I need some 
more information.
