bin averages and spatial autocorrelation

Could someone please explain to me the advantages and disadvantages of
using binned averages for reducing noise in ecological data?

I am not sure if there are any advantages, but I know that binning a
continuous variable leads to loss of information and hence degraded
precision of the estimated parameters for that variable (for a
