Dear Jaime, The Ubuntu distribution works fine with GIS and spatial analysis OS software. It is rich of support for beginners. You can try the http://gisvm.com/ Ubuntu virtual machine that includes GRASS R Qgis SAGA and many other interesting tools. You can also try the virtual machine from the www.spatial-ecology.net that is very similar. The spatial-ecology wiki provide many examples and tutorials for beginners willing to learn GIS and spatial analysis using OS softwares under GUI and under a command line interface. Just register and explore it. In my point of view, a slow migration is worst than a complete immediate shift to Linux. Just open the pinguin and do not close it, you will find a way to solve your processing difficulties. At the beginning you will take longer time for doing the same processing you are used to, but in short time you gain much rapidity, stability of the system and potentialities.
Completely agreed. I installed Linux (at that time OpenSuSE, now Ubuntu) on a new partition on my HDD, and after about 6 months, I realised that I haven't used Windows at all - and the partition was gone. Cheers, Rainer

Dear Jaime, In addition to all options pointed out, you may want to try Quantian: http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/quantian.html It provides a scientific computing environment based on knoppix and it can boot from a CD/DVD. R and Grass are both included. This will give you a flavour of what is available with no installation at all. Expect it to be slower than a proper installation on the hard drive. Hope this helps. Hi all. I am thinking in start using Linux slowly while I stop using Windows. I would like to know if there is a special distribution of Linux recomendend for the use of R and GRASS, or in general if there is a better distribution of linux than the others, honestly I just have heard about Ubuntu. Aditionally I would like to know if someone has a negative experience in the migration from Windows to Linuxm and if there are some tips for complete succesfully this process. Thanks for your answers. My best regards.
