It would be really nice if there was a repository of these kinds of data, especially if they were not limited in use, but there is a long way to go before everywhere else catches up with the US.
The OSGeo Foundation will try to work on this: http://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php/Public_Geospatial_Data_Project We are currently forming this project into a committee of the foundation. Feel free to join us, and/or contribute your suggestions.
Thanks for a very useful link, I'm sure that users of geospatial data in R will be supportive. Unfortunately, it looked as though India is in the European position - no free access - from the google hits on Indian data that I found. I would encourage list readers to bookmark the link Markus provided, I'm sure it is worth not just watching, but also being pro-active. <rant> I'll mention the petition on open geodata of relevance for EU residents again, I posted it on R-help last week: http://okfn.org/geo/manifesto.php because we all have a significant interest in more open access to data in order to carry out our work! </rant> Roger
