degAxis() does not print degree symbol
I think your question has little to do with sp, or with r-sig-geo. If the command plot(1); title(parse(text="52*degree*North")) gives the same problem (no degree sign), I would advice searching, and in case of no success posting to r-help, mentioning your locale.

It might help if you would tell us what your encoding is, as well as operating system & version. On my system, it works. The sessionInfo there is:
