reading from Grass

Can anyone help me to understand how to read data from grass6 running in 
cygwin using spgrass6? I asked on friday, but got no reply.
I first thought I could always resort to my old way with GRASS, but (of 
course?) as soon as I change a region with grass6 I get

GRASS.connect(TRUE,gisdbase="e:/",loc="wgs84",mapset="PERMANENT")
Error in gmeta() : Bad or no region for current mapset
Error in GRASS.connect(TRUE, gisdbase = "e:/", loc = "wgs84", mapset = 
"PERMANENT") :
        cannot retrieve window metadata from specificed location

Thanks for any advice.
