Indeed: your package should load (import): 1. predict from package stats, if it wants to use predict 2. package gstat if it wants to use the predict method for gstat objects. 3. use stats::predict rather than gstat::predict if you'd insist on prepending package:: to a generic

The actual, un-exported function called is gstat:::predict.gstat, but it is discouraged to call that directly.
