Polygon edge smoothing

Hello to all,

Is there an elegent way or an already exisiting function that would allow to smooth out the edge of a polygons (an object of class SpatialPolygons "SP") 

In my case I have a polygon edge made out of stair cases...  so if would appear much better smoothed...
