sp provides spsample methods that allow various ways of sampling with a polygon(s). It does not have a high-level function that does varying densities for each feature.

Ah, perfect, thanks! On a related note, apart from RCartogram which implements diffusion based cartograms, are there any other cartogram tools in R? I'm particularly interested in Dorling and Demers cartograms. Thanks! Hadley
