Zed, Byron,
As moderator of this mailing list, I have no intention to censurate this
very interesting discussion. However, I have no objection on the subject but
I ask you to behave a little bit more respectfully with the work or ideas of
other people.
I understand pretty much your feeling, Zed, about the million of things that
are not programmed as it should be in R for being the perfect backend, or
scripting language. I have the same feeling, and I certainly share with you
hundred of hours lost in finding a solution to such or such damn ill
behaviour in R... However, Byron and Zed, you should keep in mind that:
1) R is designed and developed as a high level data analysis language to be
accessed at the command line, and it is excellent for that, otherwise it
would never get the success it has. It is thus normal that its behavious is
far from perfect for what it is not designed for: GUI and scripting
language.
2) Making a GUI on top of R is not such an easy task. Either, the GUI must
adapt to the particular behaviour of R or R must be redesigned to be a nicer
backend (answer is probably in the middle at the long-term if there is a
real willing in R-core team to promote the development of R GUIs).
Please, convert your doleances into constructive suggestions and avoid
direct attacks of persons. Most R developers are very competent and
recognized statisticians and/or programmers and they would not tolerate it.
Best,
Philippe Grosjean

Hmm, I didn't think I was directly attacking any one individual in the "R priesthood", but if I did, they can e-mail me and I'll appologize for hurting their feelings. Zed

The language you just used above Zed is still not very sensitive in my humble opinion. I think that Philippe's request for moderation of tone is an excellent one.
