On thing to keep an eye on as an R gui is Texmacs (www.texmacs.org). It is a very good typesetting program, but it is designed to have connections to math programs like maxima or octave and now R. Right now, they mainly work in a terminal mode. The advantage is that you can display graph results in line with the output.
