[R-gui] R for a historical timeline chart?

First, I don't know if R Sig Gui is the right list, so feel free to 
redirect me if this is so.

I would like to produce a historical timeline chart.  For a general idea 
of what I want, go to the following web site. Scroll down until you find 
the "Jewelry History Timeline" jpeg. Say we use a variation of this for 
birth dates to annual birthdays for a family or group of friends.

Any pointers and example code would be appreciated.

The plotrix package has a function for generating Gantt charts.

  Are you trying to develop a GUI for such a chart? If so, then this
would 
be the place.
  If not and your just looking for some software that creates a graph
like 
that, I'd suggest looking for something that produces a Gantt chart. The

"Jewelry History Timeline" looks much like that. Gannt charts are 
typically used for planning, but could probably be tweaked to fit you 
needs.
