FAO Statistical Yearbook consultant
The Food and Agriculture Organization (www.fao.org) is a United Nations
agency that leads international efforts to reduce hunger in the world. This
is achieved through three main goals: the eradication of hunger, food
insecurity and malnutrition; the elimination of poverty and the driving
forward of economic and social progress for all; and, the sustainable
management and utilization of natural resources, including land, water,
air, climate and genetic resources for the benefit of present and future
generations.
The Statistical Yearbook is a corporate publication that is data driven.
It presents a visual synthesis of the major trends and factors shaping food
and agriculture, and the social and economic dimensions that drive them. In
doing so, it strives to serve as a unique reference point on the state of
world food and agriculture for policy-makers, donor agencies, researchers
and analysts as well as the general public. The suite of products includes
yearbooks and pocketbooks at both the global and regional levels (
www.fao.org/economic/ess/ess-publications/ess-yearbook/en/).
The publication is generated with the statistical software R in
combination with the typesetting program LaTeX. R downloads and imports the
data, constructs new variables, computes aggregations, and produces the
visualizations (charts, tables, maps, etc.), while LaTeX typesets the
product. The two programs therefore work together to provide a seamless
process in generating data publications and therefore more efficient
dissemination tools. We have a current opportunity for someone to lead
this work.
Responsibilities include:
- Downloading the publication-specific indicators (data & metadata).
- Conduct some data analysis and provide key messages associated with the
visualizations.
- Produce charts, maps, tables using a combination of R and LaTeX scripts.
- Guarantee the consistency among data, visualizations, and text.
- Make any changes to definitions, bibliography and other metadata in the
book.
- Any other ad hoc activities that may be required in the production
process.
The incumbent will need an intermediate level of R and a
beginner/intermediate level of LaTeX.
The length of the consultancy is initially six months but could be
extended with satisfactory performance.
Please send CV, some sample code, and a description of prior use of R and
LaTeX to Amy Heyman, Dissemination Team Leader amy.heyman at fao.org.
