OK, I can try those on the laptop without too much hassle.
Now tried (4.9.3, and doctoring `R RHOME`/etc/Makeconf) and it seems to work. Only slight issue was that the package install required overriding security setting. Also, it clobbered /usr/local/bin/gfortran from my previous install. -pd
