In the Finder: Shift+Command+G and type /usr in the input box followed by Return should let you see /usr and contents. (at least with me om Mac OS X 10.5.7)
Thanks Berend. I was not having difficulties using Terminal sessions for navigating the folder tree of hidden folders, but I think this will benefit those not raised on CLI systems in the pre-GUI years, so I am taking the liberty of copying to the list.
