OK. For some mysterious reason, various packages such as geoR and
sgeostat have moved into my R-devel tree (I'll rsync a fresh one soon).

I have two indications now that recent R-1.4.0 builds do not run on G3
Macs and do run on G4 Macs -- which is possibly due to Altivec 
instructions
in ATLAS. If other have evidence, plus drop me a line. I am not sure how
to best solve this problem. Using ATLAS speeds up much of the linear
algebra by about 50%.
