building rgl on mac os 10.8

I've been working to build a set of R functions that require rgl, specifically phytools. I'm using R v. 2.15.2 (built using homebrew; I've already run this particular issue through the homebrew group and so I can at least exclude that particular source of error) on a mac machine running os 10.8. The error arises with the new os as far as I can tell. There have been some significant changes with the new os, eg the X11/xquartz changes. I've made sure that the build environment includes the requisite components without success. I was wondering if you have any suggestions on how might make a successful install of rgl on my system?  

I have attempted a previously used fix for lion. Specifically, I pulled down the binary package from cran and deleted aglrgl.so and then attempted an install. When I make the modification to the package and retry the install, the install seems successful. However, when I try to call the library, get the following error:

library(rgl)

Error: package ?rgl? was built for universal-apple-darwin9.8.0

Is there a way of modifying the source package to deal with the aglrgl problem (that way the source might be built for my particular architecture)?
