Problems with identify

from the man page of identify

?identify

For the usual X11 device the identification process is terminated by  
pressing any mouse button other than the first.

For the quartz device the process is terminated by pressing the ESC key.

I'm having problems with identify running R under Mac OS X 10.4.8.

The pop up window says to left click to identify, right click to
exit, but I don't seem able
either to find points or to exit.

Any advice?
