Thanks for the hint Peter, it helps me to solve the problem. Among the several proposals the following fixed my problem. From the terminal:
launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/org.macosforge.xquartz.startx.plist
then logged out, and back in, and that fixed my problem Luca
