    1. Save R graphic with bitmap, using a high resolution. I prefer
400 dpi, but others suggest 300 dpi suffices.

Wow, thank you for this. Even after a couple of years of using R,  
there are plenty of tricks I don't know. This works much better for  
me than using png().
