Fixed effects only model with lme4
I think you can do this with Fabian Scheipl's package RLRsim (which, more importantly than the convenience details of setting up the likelihood ratio test, addresses the deeper issues of inference in this case). Also see http://glmm.wikidot.com/reef-fish (search for "be careful").
