Hi All,

We are happy to announce this upcoming meeting of the Ottawa-Gatineau R User's Group.

Subject: "R on Big Data: Integrated tools for data scientists"
Presenters: Revolution Analytics and Hortonworks
Location: Carleton University
           HP 5345 (Herzberg, fifth floor)
Date: Thursday, July 10th
Time: 7:00-9:00pm

For this first meeting, representatives from both of these organizations will be visiting us in Ottawa.

As a quick intro, both vendors are leaders in their areas: Revolution R focusing on developer environment and server platform for R developers, Hortonworks focusing on tools and services for hadoop.
These vendors have been collaborating to have their tools work together.
The integrated platform can provide a tool set allowing data scientists to work with very large datasets on disk storage using the simple R semantics which developers are accustomed to.

An update --

More people have expressed interest in presenting and attending the user's group. More people have discussed ideas to present and discuss, including:

- vendor offerings and integrations: Oracle Endecea, and Hortonworks and Revolution Analytics
- topics of interest: data cleansing,  multi-agent modeling, GIS and geospatial data, Open Government of Canada data sets,  text mining, classifiers

It really seems like we have enough interested people to start again with regular RUG meetings.

I have been in contact with the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Carleton University. They  have expressed support for the idea and are looking into getting us a room for regular meetings. I think things will work out very nicely for us from that perspective. I will continue to work with the University on this. At this point, it is not so easy to predict timeline.

I have also been in preliminary contact with Revolution Analytics. As many of you know, they provide support for user's groups. Also,  they have product offerings and competencies that can be very interesting for our community. Initial meetings have been very good. I  expect that a good relationship will evolve there. Would like to bring them out to present at a User's Group meeting at some point.

I'll provide regular updates as things proceed.

Thanks for your feedback. A point form summary to capture input at this point:

1)      16 people have confirmed interest

2)      We have not yet reached outside of the OGRUG mailing list to the meetup, the Universities, and other Agencies/Corporations.

3)      Number of Possible Presenters: 7-9

4)      Subject Areas of interest:



a.       The UG can be a forum for pre-presentations of conference papers or research

b.      Contrast, Synergy R with other languages/environments



(examples: SAS, Python, Hadoop, RDBMS, GIS )



c.       Case Studies: R Techniques as applied to Statistic Problems

d.      R Topics



1)      Packaging

2)      Data Mining

3)      Data Munging

4)      Etc?



e.      Case Studies in Projects (Commercial, Academic, Volunteer, Open Source, ...)



1)      Trees Canopy Dataset

2)      CRAN Packages people maybe active in





5)        Choices of Venues:



Many possible choices of locations:



a.       Universities: Any one of Carleton, U of O, Universite du Quebec, possible also to cycle through all three in turn

b.      Area Companies (caution regarding possible bias that slips into the users group in those cases)

c.       Public locations (Pub, etc)

(Preference going to Universities at this point)




    4.2 Possible sponsorship through Revolution Analytics.

          ( This is one of the reasons we needed a show of hands)




Looks like we have a pretty good starting point?
